This is an organic farm we operate in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The soil is healthy and pure, and the food is delicious. Raised Beds - Organized rows for growing vegetables. The beds are permanent and can be used year after year, with little maintenance. It took 10 workers 6 days to make raised beds for this 1 acre property, by hand. -Width of raised beds is 75cm. This makes it easy for someone to reach into the growing space. -Width of the footpaths is 35cm. A farmer must only walk on the footpaths, to avoid compacting the soil where crops are grown. -Height of the raised beds must be 30cm. This helps ensure that heavy rainfall doesn’t drown the plants. Water will flow through the rows, the crops will be on slightly elevated land. Draw lines using lime. We applied Shivansh Fertilizer to the finished raised beds to make the land fertile, and ready to grow crops. All of our fertilizer is made on the farm using only local natural plant/dung materials. This plot required 2” of fertilizer on the beds (shown). Your land may require more or less fertilizer, based on the starting quality of soil. This protects the soil from direct sunlight, and saves on irrigation. The raised beds are now ready to grow organic crops. We plant vegetables for year-round premium organic harvests. Pest Management (follow ALL points) -No monoculture. Always multi-crop, minimum four different crops. -Plant seeds into organic, fertile soil. -Mulch, so predator insects have space to live, and can manage pest attacks. -Plant seeds in the correct month. -Plant seeds correct for your climate. -Neem oil helps as final option, but we don’t use it much. 📍 Banda Jail - Uttar Pradesh, India This project shows that anybody, with little prior training, can become an organic farmer. We taught inmates to cultivate organic crops on prison grounds, and feed themselves. Infertile land can be transformed into a thriving ecosystem that produces healthy crops, without the use of any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The prisoners involved in our project are learning skills that will benefit them once they leave prison. They can establish their own farms, make an honest living, and feed themselves. Eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, carrots, bitter gourd, spinach and more are grown using the same simple techniques for each crop. 1. Raised beds for growing crops, and protecting them excessive rain. 2. 18-Day Shivansh Fertilizer to make the soil fertile. 3. Mulch with straw to minimize evaporation, and protect the soil from the sun.
